In the face of shifting demographics, increasing cost pressures, and changing learner expectations, it is vital to the survival of today’s colleges and universities that they increase efficiency while being nimble in support of the success of students in the 21st century.  Blackboard clients are leading the way through the development of innovative practices involving the use of data to promote excellence in teaching and learning, student progression, and institutional performance.

We invite all Blackboard clients to share how they are using data to support successful programs, tactics, and strategies that have seen significant and measurable results.  Emphasis is on how institutions are using Blackboard tools and services including Blackboard Intelligence, Blackboard Analytics for Learn, and Blackboard Predict as well as native data capabilities in Blackboard Learn (including course reports, OpenDB, and Caliper) or any other Blackboard product and/or service. Presentations for this year’s event will take of two formats.

1. “5 in 5” Presentation

presenters will have 5 minutes and a limit of 5 slides to present information and results from one high-impact learning analytics project / strategy / initiative from their institution. These will be engaging, high-impact, TED talk style presentations and will be professionally recorded for asynchronous viewing.  Watch this video from last year’s event for an example:

2. Breakout Sessions

25 minute talks on any topic related to higher education data strategy, implementation, or intervention. We recommend presentations that are 15-20 minutes in length, with 5-10 minutes for Q&A.  Breakout sessions will be divided into two tracks:

  • Leadership Track – Presentations in this track will address ways that data are being used to inform institutional strategy in ways that are having a measurable impact on student success and institutional performance.  The audience for talks in this track will include (but is not limited to) Presidents/Chancellors, Provosts, Chief Information Officers, Deans, and unit directors.
  • Practitioner Track – Presentations in this track will be tactical in their orientation, speaking to how institutions are using data in support of things like academic advising, faculty development, instructional design, and business intelligence.  Talks in this track may address things like specific advising or instructional design practices, research, or technical development efforts.  The audience for talks in this track will include (but is not limited to) developers, DBAs, analysts, academic technologists, instructional designers, and researchers.

The goal of the Blackboard Analytics Symposium is to scale innovation through the sharing of high impact evidence-based practices leveraging data across Blackboard’s entire portfolio of products and services.  Possible themes include (but are not limited to):

  • Evidence-based enrolment management
  • Student success initiatives and interventions
  • Learning analytics and educational data mining
  • Academic Advising using Predictive analytics
  • Student-facing dashboards
  • Data-informed instructional design
  • Best practices in the use of embedded analytics
  • Faculty development
